0.28 litres of petrol per lap...
The circuit just hosted an event that was unique to say the least, and which aligns with its intention to accommodate all requests related to developing clean engines and reducing consumption—in short, all efforts to be more environmentally conscious.
The Belgian newspapers Le Soir and Het Nieuwsblad organised a contest on the theme of consumption, whose finale was held at Francorchamps. The fifteen finalists selected from among several thousand contestants spent the afternoon at the Domaine de Bérinzenne in Spa to learn about “soft” driving in a little Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI—the goal, of course, being to consume as little fuel as possible.
After this training, the finalists gathered on our circuit to test their mettle against our seven kilometres of track.
The winner would be the one with the lowest consumption for a lap, but they couldn’t exceed 6'45". To help them tame the most beautiful track in the world and especially to negotiate the best trajectories, they were coached by racers Pierre Dieudonné and Jan Heylen (who races in the Indy Light in the US).
The winner overall finished his lap in 6'15", using just 0.28 litres for the lap. That makes an average of 4 litres per 100 km. Bravo to the champ!
Next week, the national circuit’s season will continue with two more Italian days on Monday and Tuesday, this time with Ferrari; Wednesday the circuit is organising a new Test Day; and Thursday will bring the return of the Porsche Club Francorchamps. Next weekend, the track will be turned back over to Pierre Delettre and his troops for the Spa Euro Race.
